Today, TPP visited the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development, a haven for abandoned children who have been victims of sexual abuse, child labor, trafficking, etc.

Although there are no pictures of the children themselves, there are pictures of the shelters and also the various facilities that are there: the basketball courts, medical clinics, and also buildings where the children can learn vocational skills (sewing, etc.).

Some of these children have stayed here for a few days to 2 years, where they must move to a permanent facility to live in. There are currently 170 children but only 7 staff members who take care of them. Even though these children have been through tremendous amounts of suffering and the department is underfunded, there is strong sense of happiness and love. The walls are adorned by beautiful murals. Each building is filled with Christmas arts and crafts.  The children say “Good morning visitors!” when I walk past them, making me feel like the shy one, and the staff members genuinely care for the kids like parents.

Well, it’s been a long day and we’ll keep you posted. Tomorrow, Child Hope Asia!
